The housing co-operatives are an important element to make our cities green, fair, and carried out by the community. But there are more people in need than there are housing co-ops.

With this symposium, held in September 2022, we wanted to grow the movement, based on the sharing of experiences, so that all the co-operatives are able to offer housing that is inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Under the slogan “Growing the Movement“, 15 speaker·es have discussed the future of participative housing with more than 100 participant·came·es around the world.

The event took place at Kraftwerk, a former electricity power station located in the heart of Zurich. A hundred of participant·es are in the room, which guests from North America, Israel, Nepal, the Philippines and Japan.

UrbaMonde participated in the discussions and debates that have emerged around the future of the habitat co-operative, during the four thematic blocks : #Housing2030, The cooperative toolbox, Community engagement for sustainability and Working together for the future.

We have also actively contributed to the formulation of the programme , which has enabled the participation of various partners in the Network CoHabitat (ACHRS/Lumanti, Sostre Civic and MOBA).

A side-event special student·es

This year, a parallel event special student·es has been proposed, co-organized by urbaMonde, Cooperative Housing International, Studentendorf Berlin, NASCO, Student co-Op Homes (UK) and The Hemlock. On the basis of the model presented by NASCO and through round-table discussions and exchanges, guidelines and strategies have been proposed for the formation of a european federation of co-operatives student·es.

Tours of cooperatives in Zurich and Geneva have completed these meetings.

You can make a one time donation or recurring urbaMonde to help us strengthen the habitat participatory in the world through international cooperation, to-to-peer exchanges, documentation and advocacy. Thank you for your solidarity.
