Celebrating a decade of innovation in the habitat participatory and cooperative

Geneva, Switzerland – The Network CoHabitat will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a large gathering of global advocate of the right to housing in Geneva from 30 September to 4 October 2024. Marking a decade of pioneering work in the habitat participatory and collaborative, the event includes a series of workshops, networking sessions, visits to housing co-operatives and a public conference on the 1st of October.
Founded in October 2014, the Network CoHabitat, coordinated by urbaMonde, has become a reference for solutions to affordable housing, inclusive and participatory, highlighting the inspiring experiences and innovative worn by low-income communities in the world. This year’s meeting will bring together more than 40 organizations, mainly from civil society (international coalitions, federations of people, local and international NGOS), as well as academic institutions, to promote collaboration, to celebrate successes and to show the diversity and sustainability of the social production of habitat.
Event : public Lecture on the 1st of October
to The 1st of October, urbaMonde organizes a public lecture at the University of Geneva, with four notable initiatives habitat participatory from Senegal, Indonesia, Spain and Switzerland. These projects have been awarded by the prestigious Award World Habitat to their revolutionary approaches in the field of justice and sustainability in the housing.
” The Social Production of housing goes beyond the mere construction of housing ; this is to enhance the power of communities, and creating urban spaces that are sustainable and meet the needs of the inhabitant·es “, says Leah Oswald, director and project manager at urbaMonde. ” We are thrilled·es to share these inspiring stories with the public in Geneva and discuss the conditions that allow these models to develop on a global scale. ”
The four guest·es international will be joined·es in a round-table discussion by other expert·es of the issues, to explore strategies to increase the number of these best practices in order to respond to global crises of housing and climate.

UrbaMonde is an association franco-suisse, which promotes the role of the inhabitant·es in the production of a city that is inclusive and sustainable. Its mission is to support and strengthen the capacity to act of the groups capita·es-organized and support the technical partners in the production of the city and its inhabitants·es.
UrbaMonde is at the international level through cooperation projects in Latin America, Africa and Asia. The association also coordinates the Network CoHabitat composed of thirty civil society organizations active in the advocacy and implementation of the Social Production of Habitat around the world.
Network CoHabitat
The Network CoHabitat is an informal network, a non-profit civil society organizations and their allies, who promote solutions brought by communities in response to the events of global and local housing crisis. It represents a global movement of actors in the PSH through the exchange of experiences, documentation, research, and advocacy in common.
Social Production of housing (PSH)
The PSH is a process by which the inhabitant·es play a leading role in meeting their housing needs. With the support of other actors, they unite their forces to plan, finance, build or renovate, and manage collectively housing, public spaces and facilities. By doing so, they exercise their Right to the City and influence their built environment in order to make it sustainable, affordable and safe for future generations.
