Habitat collaborative : a practical response to the pandemic of COVID-19

This study, conducted by urbaMonde shows that housing co-operatives are better able to withstand impacts of the pandemic than other forms of housing.

at the request of our partner We Effect, we carried out between August and December a global study on the influence of the type of housing on the responses of citizens to health, social and economic of the pandemic of COVID-19.

After having conducted a global survey participated in by 1047 people in 72 countries or islands of the Caribbean in September and October, we conducted 52 interviews with people from different countries who participated in the survey or representative·es of We Effect in different regions, to explore the various contexts and responses made by the inhabitant·es to the pandemic.

The study highlights that people who live in habitats that are collaborative, in particular cooperatives, residents, community land trusts (CLTS – Community Land Trust), habitats that are participatory, écolieux and other intentional communities were able to develop activities in solidarity with their direct vicinity, and often also with vulnerable groups in their neighborhood. The types of habitats in the collective property of the land also demonstrate a significant resistance to evictions and foreclosures, which in many countries have, unfortunately, stopped in 2020 during the pandemic.

Thus, no·es of the inhabitant·es of co-Operatives of consumers and CLT who participated in the survey perceived threat of expulsion from the beginning of the pandemic, unlike those who live in housing in individual ownership, rental, loan, or in an irregular situation vis-à-vis their housing.

Therefore, this study is a new piece that adds to the advocacy of urbaMonde and its allies of the Network CoHabitat in favour of public policies at the national and local that facilitate the development of housing projects, collaborative in its different forms, effective to confront collectively crises such as this pandemic, but also to the economic crises or disasters variety.
